The Uncomfortable Question
Here is a question worth sitting with for a moment.
If a buyer asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, or Perplexity about your category today, would your brand show up?
And if it did show up — would the answer be accurate?
For most marketing teams, the honest response is some version of "I'm not sure." And that gap is the entire reason this category of question is getting harder to ignore.
It is uncomfortable because every other discovery question on the marketing dashboard has a confident answer. This one usually does not.
What Most Teams Already Know
A typical marketing team can answer a long list of measurement questions without breaking a sweat:
- Website traffic, by source and over time.
- Google rankings, on the keywords that matter.
- Paid search performance, down to keyword and creative.
- Social engagement, by channel.
- Email metrics, by campaign and segment.
- Pipeline contribution, by campaign and channel.
Each of those metrics has a tool, an owner, a benchmark, and a place on the dashboard. The teams running them are good at their jobs and the data is usually trustworthy.
So far, so familiar.
But ask the same teams how AI engines describe their brand — what gets said, which competitors get named in the same answer, what sources the AI is leaning on — and the conversation gets quieter.
That silence is not a reflection of competence. It is a reflection of a measurement layer that simply has not been built yet for most companies.
Why "I Don't Know" Is About to Become a Problem
A few years ago, not knowing how AI engines described your brand was an acceptable gap. The volume of buyer queries flowing through AI engines was small. The influence on real decisions was limited. Most pipeline still came from search and outbound.
That is changing fast.
Buyers are not only searching for links anymore. They are asking AI engines for summaries, comparisons, recommendations, and explanations. The questions used to require five or six Google searches and a few minutes of synthesis. Now they happen in a single conversational prompt.
Three things follow from that.
1. Top-of-funnel impressions are increasingly forming inside AI answers
By the time a buyer reaches your site, they may already have a working theory of who you are — assembled from an AI summary you did not write and may not have seen.
2. Competitive context is being constructed without your input
When the AI lists three or four vendors in response to a category question, the comparison is being drawn on its terms, not yours. Competitors with stronger third-party content can shape that comparison in ways that are very hard to spot from your own analytics.
3. The brand can be misrepresented quietly for months
Narrative drift inside AI engines does not show up in a traffic chart. It shows up in losses you cannot quite explain, in sales conversations that feel oddly off-script, in deals where the prospect already "knows" something inaccurate about you.
Why This Has to Become Part of Brand Measurement
The argument is not that AI visibility replaces traditional marketing measurement. It does not. Traffic still matters. Rankings still matter. Pipeline contribution still matters.
The argument is narrower:
If AI engines are becoming part of the buying journey, AI visibility has to become part of brand measurement.
That is true even if AI-mediated traffic is still a small slice today. The reason is that AI engines do not just send traffic — they shape impressions before traffic ever happens. The dashboard that tells you everything after the click is missing the layer that tells you what was said before the click.
A more complete brand measurement picture includes both:
- Performance metrics — traffic, rankings, CTR, paid performance, conversion. The metrics that describe what happens once a buyer arrives.
- Representation metrics — inclusion in AI answers, accuracy of description, sentiment, competitive share of voice, source coverage. The metrics that describe how your brand is being interpreted before the buyer ever arrives.
The first set tells you how well you are converting attention. The second set tells you whether the right attention is being formed in the first place.
What "Accurate" Actually Means in an AI Answer
When we say "would the answer be accurate?", the question is more layered than it sounds.
There are several ways an AI answer can be technically accurate but practically off:
- Right name, wrong category. The brand is mentioned, but placed in a category you are no longer trying to compete in.
- Right category, wrong audience. The description matches the category, but characterizes you as a fit for a different segment than the one you actually serve.
- Right description, dated. The answer describes a real version of the company — from two years ago.
- Right answer, weak framing. The brand is mentioned accurately, but a competitor is described more compellingly in the same paragraph.
- Right answer, missing differentiators. The mention is fair, but the things that genuinely make you distinct are not in the description.
Each of these is fixable. None of them are catastrophic. But all of them are invisible from a traffic dashboard, and all of them shape what buyers think about you before any tracked interaction.
Closing the Gap Is Not Complicated
The good news is that closing the "I don't know" gap is not a six-month project. The starting point looks like this:
- Define the questions. Write down the twenty to thirty questions a real buyer in your category would ask an AI engine — the ones about who is best, what to compare, who serves a given industry, and how options stack up.
- Run them across the major engines. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Perplexity each behave a little differently. Looking at one is not enough.
- Read the answers carefully. Are you mentioned? Is the description accurate? Who is mentioned alongside you? What sources is the AI relying on?
- Compare to your positioning. Where is the gap between how the AI describes you and how you describe yourself?
- Make it recurring. Run the same exercise on a regular cadence. Narrative drift only becomes visible when you watch it over time.
That is not a heroic project. It is a measurement layer. And it is the layer most marketing dashboards are still missing.
The Question to Take to Your Next Marketing Review

The teams that close that gap early will not be the teams that abandon SEO, or paid search, or any of the other foundations. They will be the teams that add a layer of measurement on top of those foundations — one that finally shows what AI engines are saying about them while no one was watching.
